International law firm Bird & Bird has advised Milestone, a Copenhagen-based Canon subsidiary and a global leader in video surveillance technology, on its acquisition of Berlin-based AI start-up Brighter AI.
Founded in 2017, Brighter AI employs artificial intelligence to anonymize video data in compliance with European data protection requirements. Its existing collaboration partners include Volkswagen, Deutsche Bahn, and the US chipmaker Nvidia.
By acquiring Brighter AI, Milestone pursues the clear objective of establishing a European market leader in secure and privacy-compliant video data analysis. CEO Thomas Jensen believes the market for data anonymization will continue to grow significantly. Leveraging Brighter AI’s technology, which is already employed globally by prominent companies, Milestone intends to further strengthen and expand its position in AI-powered video surveillance solutions.
With this transaction, Milestone underscores the increasingly influential role of artificial intelligence across Europe.
Stefan Münch, Corporate / M&A partner at Bird & Bird, comments: “We are pleased to have represented our client Milestone in this exciting deal, laying the groundwork for further innovation and a sustainable market presence in AI-driven solutions.”
Milestone has been advised by the following Bird & Bird lawyers: associate Yannick Stahl, LL.M. and partner Stefan Münch (both Corporate, M&A, Munich), partner Dr. Ralph Panzer, Counsel Sandy Gerlach (both Employment, Munich), partner Dr. Rolf Schmich and Counsel Michael Brüggemann (both Tax, Frankfurt), partner Dr. Stephan Waldheim (EU & Competition, Düsseldorf).
