Toby advises on contentious intellectual property matters involving complex technologies.
Toby is a Senior Associate in our Intellectual Property Group, based in London.
Since joining us in 2010, Toby has been involved in a wide range of contentious intellectual property matters. With his physical sciences background Toby is often involved in disputes involving complex technologies and his recent experience includes matters involving electromagnetic methods for geophysical prospecting, GSM, UMTS and LTE cellular standards, USB functionality, flash memory devices, algorithmic trading systems and digital set top boxes.
As part of his broader practice Toby also advises manufacturers, importers and distributors regarding products safety legislation and standards affecting product design, manufacture, testing, marking and labelling, regulations governing hazardous substances and environmental legislation covering the disposal of products. With experience covering CE marking, EU batteries legislation, REACH/CLP, RoHS, WEEE and Electromagnetic Compatibility legislation Toby's particular area of interest is the regulation of emerging technologies such as IoT devices, UAS and AI.
Toby graduated from The University of Nottingham with a first class BSc in Physics and Philosophy. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from The University of Oxford in which he was awarded a distinction.
Toby takes a particular interest in cybersecurity and trade secret protection and is member of Bird & Bird's Cybersecurity and Trade Secrets groups.
