The business of hydrogen: A focus on Canada-Germany

Germany’s hydrogen strategy needs large quantities of imported hydrogen to succeed. The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of an Energy Partnership between Canada may be an important element for this.

Our partner Matthias Lang had the pleasure of joining a panel to discuss the business of hydrogen with a focus on Canada-Germany aspects.

On 12 April 2021 a panel co-organised by the University of Calgary and the Canadian law firm Borden Ladner Gervais looked into key aspects of the Canadian-German hydrogen relations. This included Canada’s role in hydrogen and decarbonization, on the growing relevance of a hydrogen economy, setting the right impulses for innovation and investment in hydrogen, the role of codes, transportation of hydrogen as well as the social license of hydrogen.

Speakers were:
  • Rudiger Tscherning, Faculty of Law, University of Calgary
  • Jonathan Cocker, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, Toronto
  • Kirsten Westphal, SWP – German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Berlin
  • Bruno Forget, Director of Global Business Development & Sales for Hydrogen Technologies, Cummins, Brussels
  • Petra Dolata, Faculty of Arts, University of Calgary
  • Matthias Lang, Bird & Bird LLP, Düsseldorf
