Protecting your assets: Employee theft of confidential information

To conclude our Managing compliance: The People Risk Agenda series, Bird & Bird held a panel event considering the intersection of employment law, data protection, and intellectual property, with a focus on employee theft of confidential information and data breaches.

In today's fast-paced business world, data breaches and intellectual property theft are becoming more common. Companies must be vigilant in protecting their confidential information and be up to speed on the legal steps if a breach occurs.

Chaired by Employment Associate Rob Briggs, our speakers discussed the legal and practical considerations involved in these areas. Through examination of a detailed case study they covered topics such as:

  • The risks and consequences of data breaches and intellectual property theft
  • When and how to notify breaches to third parties
  • Action against employees who breach their restrictions around confidential information and moving to competitors
  • The use of technology and other measures such as policies and training in preventing and detecting breaches.

The panel comprised Employment Partner Diana Purdy in Hong Kong, Employment Counsel Chris Ivey in France, and Intellectual Property Partner Katharine Stephens and Data Protection Partner Gabriel Voisin in the UK.
