Maria Karpathakis

I am an associate in our Competition & EU Law group in Helsinki, where I advise our domestic and international clients on various competition related matters.

My work ranges across all areas of competition law matters including distribution, information exchange and state aid, as well as competition matters in conjunction with M&A procedure. Prior to joining our team at Bird & Bird in March 2022, I gained experience in antitrust assessment while working in the antitrust unit at DG Competition of the European Commission. I have also gained experience in business development and project management in a small-sized firm.

Before graduating from the law school of University of Helsinki, I worked for three mid to large-sized law firms in Finland, and abroad in Germany, as well as gaining some experience of the public sector by working in a Finnish ministry.

During my master's studies, I specialised in antitrust matters in pharma industry, more specifically in assessment of pay-for-delay agreements under European Competition Law, having a special focus on the regulatory environment of the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.

I work fluently in Finnish and in English, and also have a limited working proficiency in German, Greek and Swedish.
