Emma works on a range of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters, with a particular emphasis on trade mark, brand protection and portfolio management.
Emma is an Associate in our Intellectual Property Department, based in London.
Emma is passionate about helping clients ensure their IP protection aligns and supports their business strategy, frequently advising on portfolio audits, brand extensions, international expansion and strategic collaborations. Through her focussed commercial advice, Emma works to provide clients with an end to end solution, including domestic and international trade mark clearance and design freedom to operate searches and the execution of trade mark, design and domain name filing programs to secure the relevant rights.
Emma also advises on trade mark licensing and commercial IP matters, including acquisition of key IP assets, copyright assignments and protection of trade secrets. Emma has helped many brands launch high profile campaigns and secure strategic relationships with others, maximising the potential for the success of their business.
She frequently acts on contentious matters, including UK and EUTM oppositions, revocations and invalidity actions for clients across the Retail & Consumer, Tech and Media sectors, and has particular expertise in bringing trade mark appeals to the General Court as well as negotiating amicable settlements for her clients. Emma also has experience in managing international enforcement projects, tackling infringements across online platforms and establishing EU-wide anti-counterfeiting programmes.
Emma leads the Retail & Consumer Wellness special interest group – through this initiative Bird & Bird has positioned itself as a thought leader and legal expert in the $3.72 trillion global industry. Emma has a close working relationship with growth stage and mature businesses in this industry, across the UK, USA and AsiaPac. Through the firm's relationship with Welltodo Global, Bird & Bird has hosted over 20 business networking events since 2015, connecting over 2000 businesses and facilitating important discussion on key trends and challenges facing the Wellness industry. Emma supported the expansion of Bird & Bird's Wellness capabilities into Singapore in 2018.
Emma obtained a first class honours degree in Law with European Studies from the University of Exeter in 2012, including a year abroad studying Spanish Law at the Universidad de Deusto, Bilbao, and joined us in 2013. Having run a successful start-up business in the fashion industry before training as a solicitor, and with a keen personal interest in Wellness, Emma brings her detailed knowledge of the industry to her legal work and is a trusted advisor to businesses looking to innovate and develop this incredibly fast paced and dynamic sector.
