In May 2021, Rugby Australia announced its bid, supported by the Commonwealth Government, to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
This announcement comes as Australia readies itself to embark on a decade of hosting major sporting events, including the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup in 2022, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, the British and Irish Lions Tour in 2025, the Netball World Cup in 2027 and, potentially, the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane in 2032. At the time of Rugby Australia’s announcement, the Chair of Rugby Australia described this exciting next chapter as a ‘green and gold decade’ for Australia.
