We are proud to announce that partner Jaakko Hietala has been appointed to FIA’s International Court of Appeal. This is the first time the FIA General Assembly has elected a Finn to serve as one of the judges on the FIA Jurisdictions.
FIA’s International Court of Appeal (ICA) is the final appeal tribunal for international motor sport. ICA resolves appeals and disputes brought before it under the relevant FIA rules and regulations All 36 judges are elected by the FIA General Assembly after being selected by the FIA Nominations Committee. ICA is an independent body detached from the main structure of FIA.
Jaakko Hietala was appointed to FIA’s International Court of Appeal for a term of four years. Hietala is the first judge in ICA’s history to be elected from Finland and the only judge from the Nordic countries. The nature of the position is a position of trust, and in order to be elected, the candidate must demonstrate professional ability, competence and commitment to the task at hand.
Hietala commented the nomination after the announcement:
“It is a great honour to be appointed to this distinguished group of ICA judges. International motor sport is a fascinating industry with multiple stakeholders and ICA plays a crucial role in providing the right of appeal and an unbiased legal proceeding to the relevant parties involved. It is a great pleasure and honour to be part of the dedicated international ICA team.”
Prior to this, Hietala has acted for over a decade as the president of the Court of Appeal with AKK-Motorsport (the Finnish motoring organisation affiliated to FIA), and continues to hold this position as well.
