International Innovations for Construction Contracts: A Collaborative Approach in the Asian context

Traditionally, the focus with building contracts is to divide and allocate tasks and risks. Through such an approach the interface between parties is decreased and each party knows upfront what is expected from them. This approach works for a range of projects. However, the number of projects where this approach does not provide the best results is increasing. Those projects are characterized by having a level of complexity which makes it difficult to adequately apply this traditional approach.

This complexity can for instance be the result of:

• required involvement of a large number of contractors/suppliers
• technical innovations
• high level of uncertainty regarding existing conditions
• lack of clarity on the desired outcome
• a challenging stakeholder situation

These types of projects may benefit from adopting a collaborative approach.
