The EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) is the world’s most comprehensive legal framework for AI developers, deployers, and importers. It officially came into force on 1 August 2024 and adopts a risk-based approach, meaning different obligations apply depending on the level of risk involved.
A key focus of the AI Act, outlined in Article 5, is the prohibition of certain AI practices that pose an unacceptable risk to fundamental rights such as freedom, equality, and privacy.
Although the AI Act will be implemented gradually, with most provisions taking effect after 24 months, the provisions on prohibited AI practices will become enforceable from 2 February 2025.
