About Me

My practice is litigation centered with a particular focus on telecoms patent litigation and arbitration, alongside trade mark dispute work.

Over the years, I have run many cases through to trial in the High Court and Court of Appeal, handled IP based arbitrations and appeared on behalf of clients in the European Court of Justice.

My IP dispute experience covers trade marks, designs, copyright and patents. I have been involved in many multi-jurisdictional cases, working alongside my colleagues in other countries and other law firms, to ensure that my clients have a well thought through international strategy which can be executed effectively. In addition, over the past few years I have been involved in a number of large patent related arbitrations.

I am part of the team responsible for Bird & Bird's Pattern product, which is a patent portfolio intelligence offering. One of the things I enjoy most about my job is working with such a talented team in house to develop this product. Pattern enables us to provide cutting edge advice to our clients who are interested in using analytics, landscaping and advanced valuation methodologies to assist with contentious and non-contentious matters.

I have been presented with the Legal Business TMT Team of the Year award for my team's work on one of the longest and largest patent disputes in Europe. I have also won The Lawyer Magazine's award for Client Partner of the Year, which recognised the commitment I make to ensure my clients get the best service possible. Our IP team has also received Managing Intellectual Property's 'Firm of the Decade' award. You'll find me listed and recommended in leading directories including Legal 500 UK.

I'm a member of the UK Council of AIPPI and a member of The Sedona Conference and a former President of the Intellectual Property Constituency of ICANN.
Experience
  • I have been fortunate in being asked by Nokia to represent them in a number of high profile cases over the past 15 plus years, including cases against InterDigital which broke legal ground with the Court issuing declarations of non-essentiality, multiple cases against IPCom which involved a multi-jurisdictional litigation involving many 10s of a patents over several countries lasting a number of years, and cases against Apple and HTC. In addition to patent litigation, I have recently run a number of large patent focused arbitrations to determine FRAND and to resolve disputes regarding existing licenses.
  • In addition to my patent work, I very much enjoy advising clients on their trade mark issues and have a considerable experience in trade mark disputes, taking many cases through to court including successfully representing clients in the European Court of Justice.
