As Of Counsel in our Intellectual Property practice, and a member of our Media group in The Hague, I advise on copyright, database and trademark protection and policy, using my broad expertise in IP to develop innovative legal solutions for our clients.

My practice focuses on the impact of IP rights on the development of new business models and information products in the digital environment, the liability of online platforms for infringements of intellectual property rights and the strategic use of IP portfolios.

I combine my legal work as a practitioner with academic activities at the VU University Amsterdam, where I am chair of Intellectual Property. Moreover, I am a visiting professor at Xiamen University, China.

Additionally, as a member of the State Copyright Commission, I advise the Dutch government on copyright-related questions. I am also a member of the Executive Committee of the Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale, the board of the Dutch Copyright Association, and the Dutch group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property.

I am a member of the editorial board of the Dutch copyright journal 'Auteurs, Media en Informatierecht' and the industrial property journal 'Berichten Industriële Eigendom'. My published works in Dutch, English, French and German cover various procedural and substantive aspects of IP law. My treatise on European Trade Mark Law (with Annette Kur, Oxford University Press 2017) is a leading commentary book on the protection of trademarks. I am also a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

  • I regularly provide advice on new copyright protection standards arising from new technologies and business models. In particular, I have broad expertise in the field of rights clearance in the audiovisual sector and liability for copyright infringement for online content platforms. In trademark law, the protection of brand image and brand experience is a focal point of my activities. I also advise on international trademark registration strategies, including the Madrid System.
  • I have handled high profile cases in the fields of copyright, database and trademark protection, such as cases on the protection of TV programme listings, copyright liability for acts of hyperlinking, the blocking of websites because of systematic IP infringement, the registrability of names of tourist attractions as trademarks and the protection of product design.
