Bird & Bird hires Restructuring & Insolvency team in Singapore

International law firm Bird & Bird announces the appointment of Ashok Kumar and Darius Tay as Restructuring & Insolvency (R&I) partners in Singapore, effective 1 August. They will join with a team of lawyers from BlackOak, a boutique law firm which they founded in 2016.

With a strong market reputation in Restructuring & Insolvency in Singapore and the wider Southeast Asia region, the addition of Ashok, Darius and their team bolsters Bird & Bird’s capability in the region and forms the Restructuring & Insolvency Group for Bird & Bird in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Ashok is a well-respected veteran in the area of corporate restructuring and insolvency, with 30 years of experience in legal practice. Darius is one of the pre-eminent lawyers in the space having been in practice for 13 years. They handle both the contentious and non-contentious aspects of restructuring and insolvency, including the banking and finance aspects, and mergers and acquisitions in special situations, for both domestic and cross border transactions. They also act for various fund managers, international firms and financial institutions on both compliance and regulatory matters and issues and special situations arising from their investments and portfolio companies and working with various debtor companies.

Jeremy Tan, Singapore Managing Partner at Bird & Bird comments: “This addition will strengthen our Singapore and Southeast Asia capability at an important moment when Singapore has emerged as a leading hub for international businesses in managing their Southeast Asian and Asia Pacific operations. Bird & Bird is a dynamic firm, and we continue to grow and evolve in a way that best serves our clients.”

Ashok Kumar comments: “BlackOak has had a great run for 9 years building a strong reputation in Restructuring and Insolvency both domestically and internationally. I believe this move to Bird & Bird, allows us to boost our bench strength with a very complementary specialist firm which is a market leader globally in the Technology and Intellectual Property space whilst retaining our valued partnerships with international firms, particularly the US firms we currently work with. I’m very excited to be joining the growing and ambitious team at Bird & Bird.”

Darius Tay adds: “In a world being shaped by technology, innovation and regulation, this is an exciting time to be in Singapore and to be joining Bird & Bird. I’m very much looking forward to collaborating with my new teammates in Bird & Bird, so as to better serve our international clients with their various needs in Southeast Asia.”
