Bird & Bird appoints data protection specialist James Moss as a partner in its London office

International law firm Bird & Bird today appoints James Moss as a partner in its leading Privacy & Data Protection practice in London.

James joins from the Information Commissioner’s Office, where he was Legal Director for Regulatory Enforcement. In this role, James was responsible for managing and overseeing the work of the ICO’s lawyers dealing with all contentious matters including prosecutions, DPA/UKGDPR enforcement, FoIA appeals and all other contentious advisory work, with day-to-day conduct of the most complex and sensitive contentious matters dealt with by the regulator.

He has been the lead lawyer on some of the most high-profile regulatory matters conducted by the ICO over the past five years. James was also appointed acting General Counsel by Elizabeth Denham CBE for 12 months to advise the Commissioner, Executive and Non-Executive Directors on key strategic matters during the Brexit transition period.

Before his role at the ICO, James worked as a solicitor in the Litigation & Regulatory Team at DLA Piper.

Ruth Boardman, Ariane Mole and Jeremy Tan, co-heads of the international Privacy & Data Protection practice at Bird & Bird, say: James is a great recruit for our international Privacy & Data Protection team. He has been directly involved in some of the most high-profile and contentious enforcement matters the ICO has undertaken since 2018. James’ hands-on experience in this area will be a huge benefit to the team as we continue to help our clients navigate these issues.

Phil Sherrell, head of the London office at Bird & Bird says: “I’m thrilled to welcome James to Bird & Bird’s London office. Our market-leading Privacy & Data Protection team is seeing an ever-increasing volume of contentious work arising from GDPR, so James’s longstanding experience advising on these issues makes him a perfect fit.

James adds:Bird & Bird’s Privacy & Data Protection practice has a stellar reputation, and I am looking forward to supporting the firm’s client base of international, innovative businesses. Managing data protection and breaches is a complex and ever-changing picture and I am excited to work with my new colleagues to offer our clients both pre-emptive and enforcement advice relating to data protection and personal data breaches.”
