Bird & Bird privacy and data protection associate selected to join the Arbitration Panel for the EU-US Privacy Shield framework

Bird & Bird privacy and data protection associate, Gabe Maldoff, has been selected to join the Arbitration Panel for the EU-US Privacy Shield framework.

Members of the Arbitration Panel are selected jointly by the US Department of Commerce and the European Commission on the basis of their expertise in EU and US privacy and data protection laws.

The EU-US Privacy Shield framework allows companies to transfer personal data from the EU to the US provided they adhere to principles for the protection of personal data. The framework also empowers individuals to enforce these commitments, by making complaints to the company and regulators. In the event that a complaint is not resolved, the Arbitration Panel may be asked to resolve the claim through binding arbitration.

Gabe has been selected for inclusion on the list of arbitrators developed by the US Department of Commerce and European Commission as part of the EU-US Privacy Shield Framework Annex I Binding Arbitration Programme. Only 16 arbitrators have been selected so far, the majority of which are US-based. See the full list here.

Gabe is a member of Bird & Bird's globally top-ranked Privacy and Data Protection Group in London. As a New York qualified lawyer, Gabe has extensive experience with US, Canadian and European privacy and data protection regulations. He is a regular speaker at events and commentator for legal and trade publications. His research focusing on international privacy law and policy has featured in journals in the US and Europe.

Gabe says: "I am delighted to be selected to join the Arbitration Panel for the EU-US Privacy Shield framework. We live in a world which is being dramatically changed by technology and data is the driving force behind this revolution. It's now more important than ever that we build institutions we can trust to preserve our privacy while at the same time allowing us to exchange, innovate and build meaningful communities that transcend borders".
