UK energy: boost for co-location of storage with ROC accredited sites
Ofgem announced last week that it has made a decision in relation to a number of energy storage systems co-located with Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROC) accredited solar generation sites. Details of the projects are confidential but Ofgem has confirmed that the sites in questions will be allowed to claim ROCs for all renewable energy generated, including when they are used to charge the co-located storage installation.
This decision follows the release of the Smart Systems and Flexibility Plan and the proposals set out for the future of storage in the UK. While these particular decisions appear to have been made on a case-by-case basis, Ofgem have stated that they will publish specific guidance on the interactions of storage with both ROC and Feed in Tarriff (FiT) accredited sites later this year. In the meantime, Ofgem are open to discussion around other specific sites.
This is positive news for owners of accredited sites as it shows Ofgem's willingness to work in a proactive way with existing installations to unlock the potential of storage.
