I am the head of the firm's International Commercial Group, and established the cyber-security team back in 2010. I am a commercial lawyer engaged in providing a full spectrum of legal support to clients for their day to day business.

London partner Simon Shooter led the CyberBox multidisciplinary task force in its first event; the 'cyber-threat to healthcare operators' workshop.

CyberBox combines the legal advice of Bird & Bird with expertise in insurance (Aon), PR (MHP Communications) and information security (Crossword Cybersecurity and Context Information Security).  The workshop gave the healthcare operators, from a variety of healthcare providers and IT specialists, an opportunity to learn about the cyber risks they face and discuss how to respond to these risks.

Simon, and fellow London partner James Mullock, started the workshop by explaining the Network and Information Security Directive and General Data Protection Regulation respectively. The message from each member of the CyberBox team was clear; healthcare operators are a big target for hackers and they will be attacked in the future. However, with careful preparation, and understanding of their legal responsibilities, any healthcare operator can be well-equipped to face cyber-attack. The workshop prompted a lively discussion which continued over wine and canapés.

The success of this event goes to show the importance of cybersecurity and the necessity to take a proactive, multidisciplinary approach to the threat.
