Legal Aspects of AI, Machine Learning & Robotic Process Automation

Businesses worldwide have been using AI technology for several years and it is becoming increasingly integrated into numerous commercial processes. Regulators have, particularly in the last 18 months, started to pay attention to the risks posed by AI and several are now issuing guidance as to how businesses ought to operate. In addition, novel questions are starting to arise as to how AI will be treated under existing legal regimes, given its ability to take decisions which are to some extent independent and autonomous of its programmers.

This seminar will cover:

  • A definition of AI and why it is unique as a technology

  • The legal problems that AI can cause, including responsibility for harm, ownership of intellectual property and the ethical questions of how it should take decisions

  • How we can solve these problems, including reforms to existing laws, international regulation and private sector techniques such as internal best practices and insurance. This will include discussion of:
  1. Singapore’s developing AI regulations, including the IMDA and PDPC’s Model AI Governance Framework

  2. The laws of other jurisdictions on AI, including the EU’s GDPR, the UK’s Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018

  3. The role of insurers in managing risks arising from AI.
