Jess Varnish is a former track cyclist and European team sprint champion. After Varnish's contract with British Cycling was not renewed, Varnish sued the Governing bodies for unfair dismissal. The Tribunal was faced with deciding whether Varnish's relationship with British Cycling was that of an employee and employer, or whether she was considered self employed. The Tribunal ruled that she did not count as an employee and was therefore not entitled to claim unfair dismissal. Varnish has 42 days to appeal the decision. Other sports governing bodies will be keeping a close eye to see if the ruling provides certainty over the relationships between athletes and the organisations that fund them.
