In October 2018, the ECHR released its judgment in the Pechstein case which has raised numerous questions about the jurisdiction of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). It ruled that Pechstein should have been allowed a public hearing as there was no specific reason to deny her request for one. However, the ECHR has affirmed CAS's position as the world's independent arbitration tribunal for sports disputes and has confirmed that the procedures used do not undermine the human rights of athletes.
