Bird & Bird ATMD secures site blocking orders for EPL and others

Our Singapore IP team, comprising Alban Kang (Partner) and Oh Pin-Ping (Counsel), has successfully assisted EPL, Discovery, BBC, La Liga and TVB in securing site blocking orders in Singapore. The orders were made against 15 flagrantly infringing online locations, comprising linking websites and electronic programme guide servers / authentication servers which provided access to unauthorised content via apps installed on illicit streaming devices.

The orders were very timely - particularly for EPL and La Liga - as the Premier League and La Liga matches have just restarted post the COVID-19 lockdowns. The orders obtained included dynamic injunctions which allowed the plaintiffs to notify the ISP of any change in the infringing websites' domain names in order for the new domains to be similarly blocked without the need to re-apply to court for fresh injunctions.

The plaintiffs are members of the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP). CAP is backed by CASBAA, which is the trade association for the video industry and ecosystem in Asia Pacific. CAP's members include major content owners and providers in the media industry.

This matter was widely reported in the media, highlighting the rise in online piracy amid the lockdowns.
