Implementation of the European Electronic Communications Code (EECC) has taken a step forward in Sweden, with the publication on 4 September of a memorandum by the Swedish Government. The EECC constitutes a European reform of rules applying to the telecommunications sector, with the aim of making them fit for the digital age.
According to the Swedish memorandum, the aim is to implement the EECC in Sweden by means of a new Electronic Communications Act. Other relevant legislation will be amended accordingly.
The next step in the national legislative process is the consultative procedure. In this context, the Government has requested comments from authorities, companies and other interested organisations. The consultation is open until 2 December 2019. According to the terms of the EECC, the changes to national law should take effect on 21 December 2020.
Bird & Bird has developed an EECC implementation tracker which closely follows the transposition processes in the Member States. The EECC tracker will be updated regularly, is available free of charge and can be viewed here.
