Latest developments in Ubers employment dispute

In 2016, Uber sought to argue that their drivers were not workers but rather independent contractors. This claim was unsuccessful in the Employment Tribunal, as it was held that the drivers were engaged as workers as long as they were in the territory that they were authorised to work in. Uber may be affected by the recent 'Good Work Plan' which the Government proposed in Christmas 2018. The legislation aims to clarify tests on employment status and tackle unfairness to protect agency workers and strengthen employee rights. It is worthwhile keeping an eye on this fast paced changing area of the law.
