On 22 March 2023 the Bird & Bird Brussels office held a hybrid seminar on the topic of “Competition law and sector regulation in the telecom and pharmaceutical sectors”, jointly organised with the Centre for a Digital Society of the European University Institute (EUI).

On this occasion, legal experts, academics, members of the judiciary, government officials, industry representatives as well as representatives from the EU institutions and competition authorities came together to discuss the interaction of EU competition law and sector-specific regulation in the telecommunications and pharmaceutical sectors.

During the event, two panel of experts explored the following topics:

  • Net neutrality and fair sharing in the telecom sector
  • Excessive pricing in the pharmaceutical sector

Lastly, keynote speaker Paul Csiszár (Director of DG Competition, European Commission) captured the public’s attention with his explanation of the uniqueness of the pharmaceutical sector and some views on the topic of excessive pricing.

The recently published book The Interaction of Competition Law and Sector Regulation. Emerging Trends at the National and EU Level was also presented at the event by Marco Botta of the EUI.
