Rebecca O'Kelly Gillard

Associate Wielka Brytania - Bird & Bird

Rebecca focuses on providing contentious advice on a wide range of intellectual property matters with a particular focus on trade mark and copyright law

Rebecca is an associate in Bird & Bird's intellectual property department. She joined Bird & Bird having trained and practised in a leading Irish law firm and after recently completing a secondment to a magic circle firm in London.
Since qualifying in 2007, Rebecca has worked extensively with multinational technology, pharmaceutical and brand-heavy corporations in all areas of both hard and soft IP.  In Ireland Rebecca represented major ISPs in litigation brought by the recorded music industry relating to peer-2-peer music downloading and the blocking of Pirate Bay websites. Rebecca was also an integral member of the legal team defending the world's leading asthma inhaler in the Irish Commercial Court and on appeal to the Supreme Court. She has also worked with small indigenous Irish rightsholders, to protect their technologies and brands against competing international companies.

While her focus has been in contentious IP work (including successfully mediating and arbitrating matters), Rebecca has also provided clients with pre-product launch advice and has advised clients on other potential threats to their businesses. Rebecca has also worked extensively with the Irish customs authorities in relation to counterfeit goods on behalf of numerous global media, clothing, automotive, and food & drink organisations.  As a result of this work, Rebecca was invited to be the Irish liaison between rightsholders and international customs authorities in the initial phase of the World Customs Organisations' innovative Interface Public-Members Tool project.

Rebecca graduated from University College Dublin with a BCL International in 2003, was admitted to the New York Bar in 2005 and qualified as an Irish solicitor in 2007. In [October] 2012 she was also admitted to the roll of solicitors of England and Wales.
Rebecca has authored the Irish section of the international industry-focused legal publication "Borderwatch" and, until this year, was the Irish contributor to the international Kluwer patent blog.
