Firm bolsters European expansion with presence in Milan
International law firm Bird & Bird will be adding another European country to its international network with the launch of an office in Milan. An initial team of IT, Telecoms and IP experts will open the office, which will operate under the name Bird & Bird. Milan will be Bird & Bird’s seventh office in Europe.
As a key economic location in Europe and the sixth largest economy in the world, Italy is a significant market for Bird & Bird. Milan is regarded as Italy’s centre for commercial activity and particularly for IT, Telecoms and also for IP as a result of a strong luxury goods market. The move will enable Bird & Bird to better service its international client base.
The team, which will be headed by Ernst & Young and ex-Andersen Legal partner, Massimiliano Mostardini has a strong focus on IT, Telecoms, IP and Life Sciences, all of which mirror Bird & Bird’s sectors of activity. The office in Milan will rapidly expand from this base into a full service office along the lines of Bird & Bird’s other offices across the world.
Commenting on the launch, David Kerr, Bird & Bird’s Chief Executive, said:
“We are incredibly excited by this development. Italy is a key country in Europe in our major sectors and Milan in particular is an important centre for telecoms, IT and intellectual property. This development is therefore crucial to our strategic aims as a firm. The new team is outstanding and will also form the perfect base from which to expand. I am very pleased to welcome them on board.”
Massimiliano Mostardini, Managing Partner of Bird & Bird’s office in Milan, who also set up the IP/IT service line at Andersen Legal in Italy, added:
“We are absolutely delighted to be launching Bird & Bird in Italy and to be joining such a successful firm. The Bird & Bird brand already has a powerful resonance in Europe, particularly in the sectors in which we are active. This is the perfect move for us.”
Bird & Bird’s major European roll-out began in January 1999, significantly expanding its office in Brussels, followed by opening an office in Paris in January 2000, a merger with Gedda & Ekdahl in Stockholm in December 2000, the launch of an office in The Hague in December 2001 and only last July the launch of an office in Düsseldorf. An office in Italy will add substantially to Bird & Bird’s European platform. Bird & Bird was recently named ‘European Law Firm of the Year 2002/2003’ by Global Counsel 3000 on the strength of its visionary European expansion.
