Tobias is able to explain complex privacy issues in plain language to ensure business buy-in.
Tobias heads the Privacy and Data Protection practice of Bird & Bird in Helsinki.
His practice covers the provision of detailed privacy advice including advising on the development of new products and services, review and negotiation of contracts, drafting of policies and review of campaigns. In addition, he advises on a range of Finnish and international data compliance projects, including the implementation of global data management strategies, international data transfers and local data protection compliance.
Before joining us in 2016, Tobias was senior legal counsel at Microsoft and Nokia with responsibility for privacy and data protection. Tobias' in house experience included advising on all matters of privacy compliance, including privacy impact assessments, guideline drafting, incident handling. As a training and awareness officer for privacy, Tobias has a broad experience in giving training sessions in different formats and to different audiences. He recently led a global project on notification coordinating a pan-European team under extremely tight deadlines.
Tobias is also experienced in teaching and supervision of law students, having taught over 20 different courses at the University of Helsinki on European law, international trade law, international data protection law and international commercial arbitration.
Originally qualified in Germany, Tobias defended his PhD in information law at University of Helsinki.
A regular speaker on privacy at conferences and industry fora, Tobias is a Member of the European Advisory Board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and currently co-chair of the Helsinki KnowledgeNet for the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional CIPP/E . Tobias has been accepted as an IAPP Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP). He is a recognised authority on data protection issues, regularly writing and contributing to privacy monographs and journals.
He speaks German, English, Finnish and French.
