Tobias is a leading data protection specialist and advises local and international clients on complex privacy issues
Tobias is the head of our Data Protection practice in Helsinki. As a leading European expert in data protection, his practice covers the provision of detailed privacy advice on a range of matters including the development of new products and services, review and negotiation of contracts, drafting of policies and review of campaigns. He also advises on Finnish and international GDPR projects, including the implementation of global data management strategies, international data transfers and local data protection compliance.
Tobias worked in-house for several multinational tech companies for over 8 years, providing him with unique, insider knowledge of the clients' needs. Before joining Bird & Bird in 2016, Tobias was Senior Legal Counsel at Microsoft and Nokia in a global privacy role, heading among others the Microsoft Mobile privacy program. Tobias' in-house experience included advising on all matters of privacy compliance, including privacy impact assessments, guideline drafting as well as incident handling.
Tobias is also a truly international practitioner: he's the only data protection lawyer in Finland who is a member of two bar associations (Finland and Germany). His clients are typically based in several countries and therefore benefit from Tobias' language skills (he is fluent in English, German and Finnish), his cross-border experience and his European connections. Tobias is a Member of the European Advisory Board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and co-chairs the Cambridge Privacy Forum, a conference for senior privacy professionals. As a docent of information law at two universities, he also frequently contributes to privacy monographs and journals around data protection issues. Tobias has been accepted as the only legal practitioner in Finland as a Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP) by the international association of privacy professionals.
Tobias is also known for his innovative style, regularly developing new data protection specific products for his clients, such as the DPO back up and support service or training products like joint training programmes with legal and IT experts. He focusses on what is important for clients and is constantly developing the practice.
