Stephan is an experienced competition law expert with a particularly strong track record in online distribution, cartel damages, patent licensing and compliance.
Stephan is counsel in our Competition & EU Law Practice Group based in Düsseldorf and an active member of the firm’s Automotive Sector Group.
He has over seven years' experience in advising national and multinational companies on all aspects of German & EU competition law, including EU and multi-jurisdictional merger control proceedings, cartel and abuse investigations and compliance policies and provisions.
Having been involved in some of the most prominent court cases in Germany, he is also known for his strong expertise in litigating standard essential patents (SEPs), cartel damages claims and online distribution cases before the relevant German and EU courts and authorities.
Before returning to us in spring 2016, Stephan held a position as Compliance Officer at thyssenkrupp AG for six months during which he was able to gain considerable expertise regarding the development and implementation of state of the art competition law compliance programmes.
Industry sectors in which Stephan has particular experience include automotive, technology, media & telecommunications (TMT), health care and branded goods.
In addition to his German law degree, Stephan holds a first-class diploma in economics from the University of Bayreuth and a PhD. in law from the University of Münster. Stephan publishes regularly and is a member of "Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht", the German Competition Lawyers Association.
