Richard is a partner and member of the Intellectual Property Group.
He focuses on trade mark, unfair competition and design law as well as copyright and cyber law. His main area of practice is contentious work and litigation, but he also advises his clients on strategic issues.
He studied from 1992 to 1997 at the University of Passau, with intellectual property law being in the centre of his studies. He spent his traineeship from 1997 to 1999 at the Court of Appeal in Munich. He was admitted to the bar in 2000 and for the first four years of his professional career worked for the IP department of an international law firm based in Cologne. In 2004, he joined Bird & Bird.
Richard completed his doctoral thesis at the University of Cologne on the “Protection of Well-Known Trade Marks”. He is co-author of the “Handbook on Trade Mark and Design Law” (“Handbuch Marken- und Designrecht”), which was published in its 2nd edition in 2006. He is also the author of many legal publications and regularly speaks on various IP topics.
He is a member of the German IP Society (GRUR), of the International Trade Mark Association (INTA) and of several other IP-related associations. Richard also sits on the Europe & Central Asia subcommittee of International Trade Mark Associations' (INTA) 'Famous & Well-Known Marks Committee'.
