I'm Of Counsel in our Intellectual Property practice based in Madrid. I've been advising clients on commercial and business law since 1996 and have a particular specialism in industrial property.
In the last few years my work has consisted of the negotiation of contracts, preventive and pre-litigation advice and also the preparation and management of litigation in trademark, patent, industrial design, unfair competition and copyright matters.
I also have experience in arbitration proceedings, in which I have acted both as an attorney and arbitrator. I love the work I do, because I learn from it every day, from my colleagues, clients and opposing lawyers. That is why one of my favourite activities is to design global strategies for conflict resolution, in which negotiations, pre-litigation requests and eventually litigation - as a last resort - can be combined. I always try to give my clients as simple and practical an approach as possible, once I know the strategic lines of their company. I understand that the cost/benefit ratio is one of the essential factors to take into account in any project.
I started as a practicing lawyer in Madrid in 1996. At first I combined the writing of my doctoral thesis at the Complutense University of Madrid, with work in a family boutique, directed by my father, the prestigious Professor of Commercial Law Alberto Bercovitz. After reading my doctoral thesis, entitled 'Contributions of industrial property rights to the capital of public limited companies', I went on to fully devote myself to professional practice. At that stage I mainly carried out opinions and litigation for large companies, most of them Spanish or with subsidiaries in Spain, on various matters, mainly corporate law, industrial and intellectual property and unfair competition. Little by little I started to focus more and more on the IP sector. Not only through articles and publications, but also through my work in the Spanish Group of AIPPI, for which I had the honor of being President between 2009 and 2013, and to which I am still linked to today as a member of honor.
For many years, from the end of my PhD studies until 2013, I combined my professional work with lecturing on commercial law in the Law degree course at the Complutense University of Madrid. In 2013 I decided to dedicate myself completely to the stimulating practice of law, in which it is impossible to get bored! But I am still linked to the world of teaching, as I regularly give classes in Masters and presentations in matters of patents and industrial designs at different universities and institutions (eg the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Magister Lvcentinus of the University of Alicante, etc).
