Pieter combines over 25 years of specialised experience with a pragmatic approach at counselling and negotiations, both nationally and internationally.

Pieter is of counsel in our Tax Practice. He is based in The Hague.

Pieter’s practice covers a broad range of tax matters, both internationally as nationally, with a particular focus on international tax planning. He regularly advises on acquisitions, restructurings, corporate finance transactions, real estate funds and investment and mergers. He has substantial experience with real estate transactions including transfer tax issues and telecom infrastructure as well as tax planning and international structuring of patents and trademarks including the use of the Dutch innovation box.

Pieter has a focus on Canada. He is a member of the Canada Steering Group and is in the country's West Coast regularly. Pieter is a capable negotiator and has an excellent track record in solving disputes with the Dutch tax authorities. His practice further consists of a substantial number of US West Coast and South African clients.

Pieter was admitted to the bar in 1990 and joined Bird & Bird in 2002. He has written and spoken widely on the areas of taxation, including international tax. Pieter is a member of the Dutch Association of Tax Advisers (NOB), the Canadian Tax Foundation, several other professional interest groups such as the International Fiscal Association and is a board member of the Dutch/Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
