Max has worked for many years advising clients in the sports industry and is one of the UK's recognised leaders in this area of the law.
Max is a partner in our Sports group, based in London.
He advises on a range of issues connected with sport, including rules and regulations, discipline and anti-doping, ticketing, ambush marketing and brand protection, player contracts, commercial sponsorship and dispute resolution.
He has represented governing bodies, event organisers, clubs, individual athletes, commercial sponsors and agents across a variety of sports including football, rugby union, rugby league, tennis, cricket, athletics, motor sport, combat sport, basketball, greyhound racing and snooker.
He was appointed to the London 2012 Pro Bono Legal Advice Service, established at the request of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to provide free legal advice and representation for athletes and other participants during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In 2013, Max was appointed to join the British and Irish Lions tour to Hong Kong and Australia as legal officer. He has been appointed to perform the same role for the 2017 tour to New Zealand, where he will (among other things) represent the Lions players should any disciplinary proceedings arise on the tour.
Since April 2016 Max has been a member of UK Sport's Major Events Panel, an advisory body that makes recommendations to the UK Sport board about which major sporting events should receive assistance from UK Sport's lottery/exchequer funding.
A co-author of Bloomsbury’s Sport: Law and Practice, Max regularly contributes to legal journals and the mainstream media on sports law issues. Max is a CEDR-accredited mediator. He is a member of Sport Resolutions’ Mediation Panel, the CEDR Solve Panels, and is an Ombudsman Services Preferred Mediator. He is also on the Sport Resolutions' Arbitration Panel and the Football Association of Ireland Arbitration Panel.
