Joanne is one of the leading practitioners in the field of Satellites, having worked at both the European Space Agency and Ofcom giving her an unparalleled understanding of the challenges facing the sector.
Joanne is a consultant in our Tech & Comms Group, based in London, and leads our Satellites specialist industry initiative.
She specialises in communications, satellite and space regulatory and policy matters together with commercial contracts and PPPs. Joanne has significant expertise and a strong reputation in the satellite industry, based on almost three years spent at the European Space Agency (ESA) and a placement at Ofcom where she drafted the Procedures for the Management of Satellite Filings (through which companies can access international spectrum managed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)). She has been retained by the UK Space Agency to represent the UK at the United Nations space meetings in Vienna, thus gaining important knowledge of the international institutions and international strategy. She also sits on the Council of the UK industry body UKspace, so is aware of the activities and concerns of the main UK industry players.
In January 2017, Joanne was awarded an MBE in the New Year honours list for her services to the UK space industry.
Joanne has recently taken over writing a quarterly legal and regulatory column for Via Satellite and also writes a quarterly column for Satellite Finance, a global industry journal focusing on commercial and financial issues. She was named in the 2013 “Hot 100 Lawyers” for her work with the UK industry and Government’s Innovation and Growth Strategy (IGS) for which she led the regulatory and co-led the finance work and also for setting up the Satellite Finance Network (www.satellitefinancenetwork.org) with Airbus. She won the individual Financial Times Legal Innovator of the Year award in 2014 for her work with the UK space industry and Government as part of the IGS Restack, which has led to legislative and policy changes to encourage growth in the UK space industry. An elected fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Joanne has also been elected to the International Institute of Space Law and is the Deputy Chair of the International Law Association, British Branch's Space Law Committee.
