About Me

My practice as Of Counsel at Bird & Bird in London is focused on a hands-on approach to protecting the intellectual property assets of growing international brand and digital businesses while following a strategic and cost-effective commercial game plan.

As Chief IP Counsel and Chief Legal Counsel of luxury group Richemont, which includes Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, Chloé, and Net-a-Porter, I spent 25 years in commerce working on strategic international IP planning and challenges including the global battle against counterfeits, piracy and infringements. I believe in deploying a variety of weapons including trade marks, copyright, design rights, trade secrets, patents and other forms of intellectual property in an interconnected, holistic way, as outlined in my book 'From Edison to iPod – How to Protect Your Ideas and Profit'.

I have also had the privilege of working with individual designers, chefs, celebrities, public figures and start-ups in the digital space. Some of my pro bono legal assistance was provided to President Nelson Mandela and the Shaolin Monks.

I was inducted into the Intellectual Property Hall of Fame, which honours those who have helped to establish intellectual property as one of the key business assets of the 21st century. I am Past President of the International Trademark Association and am currently President of the Luxury Law Alliance. My opinion pieces on intellectual property have featured in the Financial Times and South China Morning Post. I serve on the Board of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and have served on the boards of Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA, The Net-a-Porter Group Limited and the Walpole Group.

I am the principal author of 'Famous and Well-known Marks: An International Analysis', as well two World Intellectual Property Organisation studies and over 50 law journal articles.

I am a hopeless foodie and have on occasion published food reviews under the nickname, 'The Truffleman'.

Testimonials

"Frederick's exceptional track record speaks for itself. His illustrious career has seen him advising CEOs, marketing directors, innovators, designers, creative spirits and big-name talent. He has been my go-to IP expert for many years and I have relied on him to consistently, and with speed and efficiency, pull that elusive rabbit out of the hat on numerous occasions as he grapples, on my behalf, with IP issues both small, and on international scale. Frederick is often given the compliment that he is a "lawyer's lawyer" but I can attest that he is highly approachable and able to break down the most complicated issue into simple, accessible terms. His mantra is "let's get it done" and he will always strive to find a way for his client to reach his or her commercial objective while managing the legal process flawlessly."

Marty Wikstrom, Former Managing Director Harrods, Ltd. and President of Nordstrom, Inc's Full Line Stores Group

"I have relied strongly on Frederick's expertise on intellectual property and its practical application to digital platforms and digital tools. He has, for example, engaged in pioneering work in helping to set up the world-wide domain name arbitration system with the World Intellectual Property Organisation and has contributed to the development of IP procedures for online platforms. He enjoys working in the digital space and it shows. I admire his IP legal analysis, his understanding of the geo-political landscape for rights protection and his writings in the areas of innovation of Blockchain and digital tools. He has become my speed-dial lawyer in this area."

Nick Wood, Executive Chairman & Co-Founder, Com Laude

"Frederick's willingness to think out-of-the-box makes him particularly well-suited for dealing with global IP cases. I am always happy to have Frederick in my corner when a knotty IP issue calls for highly original thinking. But, more than this, when you are in the trenches together, his overall lawyering skills are rock solid. In my experience, he is an upstanding, principled lawyer who will not flinch from doing what is proper in the circumstances."

Prof Juergen Schrempp, former CEO, Daimler Benz/DaimlerChrysler
