Ewan's practice focusses on protecting and enforcing hi-tech or otherwise innovative product design and associated branding in a range of different areas, including medical devices, telecommunications and retail & consumer goods.
Ewan is a Partner in our Intellectual Property practice, based in London.Having acted for clients before the IPEC, High Court and Court of Appeal, as well as the CJEU, Ewan has a particular focus on patent and product design enforcement, often with a cross border element. As head of the Product Design practice, Ewan has a particular expertise in advising on strategies for protecting product design for both hi-tech and aesthetic products, and advises a large number of high profile clients including medical devices companies, mechanical engineering companies, furniture & homeware and luxury goods designers. As part of this work, Ewan also advises extensively on pan-European enforcement of trade mark and design portfolios and associated Customs and grey market enforcement strategies.
Ewan also co-heads the Product Compliance & Liability group, which advises clients through the complex regulatory design, manufacturing, testing and labelling requirements of product safety legislation.
Ewan has completed secondments within the commercial & regulatory team at AstraZeneca and as Senior Counsel within the trade marks group at Phillip Morris International (with responsibility for the Asia Pacific region).
Ewan is the editor of the firm's design law bulletin, DesignWrites and a member of a number of IP organisations including CITMA, INTA and AIPPI. Ewan sits of the Copyright & Design Committee of the IP Federation and the CITMA working group looking at the impact of Brexit on design law.
Ewan holds a degree in Biochemistry.
