Before I studied law, I graduated with an MEng in materials science. This background has meant that most of my work is highly technical in nature. For instance, I have acted for clients in relation to patent disputes relating to medical devices, technologies used in catalytic converters and audio watermarking technology. Many of the patent matters that I work on involve disputes across a number of jurisdictions and I have co-ordinated these on a number of occasions. In addition to patent disputes, I regularly advise clients on non-contentious IP matters including freedom to operate advice and the agreements required for major development projects. Earlier in my career, I spent six months working in-house at a leading UK defence contractor, where I was involved in a wide range of litigation matters and I am currently on secondment to Anglo American. Both secondments have given me valuable insight into how in-house counsel use their external advisors.
