Dr. Jan Bärenfänger supports his clients with precise advice and comprehensive knowledge of Industrial Property Protection.
Jan is part of our Intellectual Property practice group in Düsseldorf.
Experienced in patents, his focus today is on trademark and unfair competition law. He is familiar with all kinds of trademarks, including non-traditional trademarks, in particular colour trademarks.
National and international clients benefit from his strategic advice and deep experience in conflict avoidance and resolution, including international arbitration. In particular he represents clients in national and international trademark disputes, comprising infringement actions arising out of national or European trademarks as well as application and validity proceedings before German and European administrative bodies and courts such as GPTO, EUIPO, Federal Patent Court and EGC.
Jan obtained additional degrees in IT, telecommunication and media law and in industrial property protection from the University of Münster. In 2010 the university awarded him his doctorate. His thesis dealt with the relationship between national trademark and unfair competition law under the influence of European law.
During his training Jan worked at the Federal Network Agency, at an international law firm in Düsseldorf and at a medium sized law firm in Cologne, across all fields of intellectual property and copyright law. Immediately after his exams he joined us in May 2012.
Jan is Member of the German Association for Industrial Property Protection and Copyright Law (GRUR) and the German Lawyers’ Association (DAV). He publishes regularly on different subjects of Industrial Property Protection.
