Berend has a strong affinity with technology and the internet, with a particular focus on the IT and media sectors.
Berend is an associate in our Commercial and Data Protection Practices and is based in The Hague.
Berend has particular experience in and knowledge of internet and technology, and advises our clients on matters related to data protection, online media exploitation, software development and online services such as commercial websites and mobile applications.
Berend also has substantial in-house experience, and has been seconded for more than eight months to the largest Dutch telecom operator, advising on matters relating to privacy, IT and telecommunications. In addition, he has been seconded to a number of large IT companies, drafting contracts and advising on data protection issues. He is also a member of our Media and Tech & Comms Groups.
Before joining us in 2009, Berend graduated from the Universities of Amsterdam and Leiden, writing his theses on behavioral targeting and the liability of online intermediaries. During his studies, he participated in an exchange program with the Levin College of Law in Florida, US.
Berend is co-editor of the Journal for Internet law (Tijdschrift voor Internetrecht) and actively involved in the Dutch Association for Information Technology and Law (NVvIR) and the Dutch Association for Privacy Law (VPR). He co-wrote an international book on “Law and Computer Games” and is working on a book on the liability of intermediaries. He regularly speaks and writes on topics such as linking on internet, net neutrality and various data protection matters.
