Berend has a strong affinity with technology and the internet and a deep understanding of the data protection issues arising in these areas.
Berend is an associate in our Commercial Practice based in The Hague with a particular focus on IT and Data Protection.
He works with IT companies and other data rich clients on matters relating to data transfer and outsourcing, as well as privacy aspects on transformational projects and online ventures such as commercial websites and mobile applications. He has a solid understanding of the online sectors, particularly with regard to advertisement and internet.
Berend also has substantial in-house experience, and has been seconded for longer periods to IT companies and telecom operators, advising on matters relating to privacy, IT and telecommunications. Berend has also worked in Asia for our local Bird & Bird offices, advising on international data protection matters and regional legislative developments.
Berend graduated at from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Leiden, writing his respective theses on “Behavioural Targeting” and the liability of online intermediaries. During his studies, he participated in an exchange program at the Levin College of Law in Florida, US.
Berend is co-editor for the Journal for Internet law (Tijdschrift voor Internetrecht) and activly involved in the Dutch Association for Informationtechnology and Law (NVvIR) and the Association for Privacy law (VPR). He co-wrote an international book on “Law and Computer Games” and a book on liability of intermediaries. He regularly speaks and writes on topics such as online liability, net neutrality and various data protection matters.
