Bird & Bird LLP has successfully advised the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate on its objective to cover 100% of the state’s gross electricity demand by renewable sources by the year 2030.
To reach this target, the state government commissioned a distribution system study for the region to analyse the legislative prerequisites and options for action. The report was prepared in cooperation with Bird & Bird LLP, which provided the legal framework, Energynautics GmbH, which prepared calculations for the required network expansion, and the Oeko-Institut e.V., which supplied storage and demand side management concepts.
The legal framework section Bird & Bird LLP prepared comprises (i) the presentation of the legal framework and the obstacles arising for grid integration, with a focus on grid expansion, storage, smart grid and demand side management, (ii) the identification of approaches for an improved legal framework, and (iii) a discussion of the future role and authority of distribution system operators. The study has recently been presented by the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister for Economic Affairs, Climate Protection, Energy and Planning together with Bird & Bird LLP and the other partners of the consortium.
