We’re pleased to welcome Manfred Ungemach and Johannes Kindler to our Düsseldorf office and International Energy & Utilities Sector Group. These two high-profile energy specialists bring considerable capability and reputation, both in Germany and internationally, to our rapidly developing team.
Manfred Ungemach joins us as Partner from White & Case where he headed the German energy practice. Manfred has strong expertise in law relating to the energy sector, particularly focusing on German and European regulatory, competition and commercial law and energy trading. He also has been advising in major transactions in the German energy sector. His clients include national and international companies, investors, power plants and major energy consumers.
Johannes Kindler joins us as Of Counsel from his role as Vice President of the Bundesnetzagentur, the German regulator for the electricity, gas, telecommunications, postal and rail sectors. During this tenure he also was Vice President of the Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) and Member of the Board of the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER). Johannes’s background in the energy industry is extremely distinguished and he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our international team. He will support our provision of strategic legal advice to companies, investors and national and European institutions within the energy sector and other regulated industries. Rene Voigtländer
, co-head of the International Energy & Utilities Sector Group, comments: “We are delighted to be able to extend the range of consultancy services we offer in this sector with the help of such experienced colleagues. We are continuing to develop our offering to the sector and we have expanded the group with new partners in London, Madrid and Düsseldorf in the past year.”
Manfred Ungemach comments: “Bird & Bird has consistently and successfully expanded its international Energy & Utilities Sector Group over the last few years; I was particularly won over by Bird & Bird's approach of integrating transactional support with advice in all key fields of relevance in the energy sector. As European regulation becomes increasingly more important than national regulating authorities, I look forward to contributing to the development of a truly European regulatory practice at Bird & Bird as well as supporting the offering to the sector on a global scale.”
Johannes Kindler adds: “As an innovative law firm with strong technology expertise, Bird & Bird presents an exciting perspective and a role in which I can make ideal use of the experience I have gained in the economic and political fields. Europe has set itself extremely ambitious goals in the form of the Climate and Energy Package 2020 and the German ‘energy transformation’ has added to the challenges it is already facing. In my previous role I helped design the regulatory framework and I am directly familiar with many of the current problems in this regard both at the German and the European level. I welcome the prospect of supporting key industry players and public institutions – combining all aspects relating to business, economics, finance, law and politics.
We established our dedicated International Energy & Utilities Sector Group to develop our offering to a market where technology and regulation play an ever increasing role. In the past year we have also welcomed partners Andrew Renton
