Bird & Bird launches four new offices in Central Europe

International law firm Bird & Bird today announces the opening of four new offices in Central Europe (CE). The offices are located in the Czech Republic (Prague), Poland (Warsaw), Hungary (Budapest) and Slovakia (Bratislava).

The four new offices will be headed-up by leading technology, media & telecommunications specialist, Stephen Kines. Formally head of Linklaters’ Czech office, Stephen joined Bird & Bird earlier this year from kines, a Prague-based boutique TMT firm. Stephen will be supported in each of the four offices by local office heads:

  • Maciej Gawronski (Warsaw) – Joins the firm from M. Furtek i Wspolnicy where his practice focused on IT, data protection and IP. Maciej also has extensive experience in banking & finance, corporate and commercial law.

  • Andrea Simandi (Budapest) – Formally the Hungarian head of IT/IP at Linklaters, and founder of her own practice in Budapest, Andrea's practice focuses on contentious and transactional IP and she is experienced in IT, data protection and communications.

  • Tomas Novak (Prague) – Joins from Clifford Chance in Prague, and has vast experience in all aspects of M&A / corporate law work.

  • Martin Maxa (Bratislava) - Joins the firm from Stanford University and is experienced in the EU Commission, and corporate law and governance. Martin previously ran his own law firm undertaking corporate, commercial and IP work.

In addition, the firm has also entered into an association agreement with leading Polish firm Grynhoff Woźny Maliński, one of the largest law firms in Poland, employing over 90 lawyers. The firm specialises in commercial law and has 9 practice areas, including IP. Like Bird & Bird, the firm is particularly strong in IT and telecoms.

Commenting on the expansion into central Europe, David Kerr, CEO of Bird & Bird, said; "The firm has a history of entering mature legal markets and building successful offices. Following the appointment of Stephen Kines in the spring, establishing on the ground operations in each of these key jurisdictions was the next logical step to ensuring we continue to best serve our clients' international needs."

"Stephen, along with each of our local lawyers, has an excellent understanding of the Central European market. Their combined knowledge gives us the ideal platform to further expand our international footprint into exciting new markets following the opening of our Helsinki office in May."

Stephen Kines, Head of the Central European offices, said; "Opening four offices instantaneously is a huge challenge and we are focusing all our energies on making each of them a success. We are committed to genuine Greenfield investments, using local lawyers to build the reputation of the offices from the ground up. The association deal with Grynhoff Woźny Maliński will be mutually beneficial to the clients of both firms as we share synergies in areas of specialism and sector expertise, and will help us take advantage of the major opportunities in Poland in areas like IT infrastructure."

Bird & Bird is a full service international commercial law firm with offices in Beijing, Bratislava, Brussels, Budapest, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, The Hague, Helsinki, Hong Kong, London, Lyon, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris, Prague, Rome, Stockholm and Warsaw.
