International law firm Bird & Bird announces today a key lateral partnership appointment in Asia. Ai-Leen Lim joins the firm from Singapore based firm Colin Ng & Partners, where she was co- head of the regional IP group, chief representative of the Beijing office and resident partner of the Hong Kong office. She was also previously an Assistant Registrar of Trade Marks and Patents at the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore.
Ai-Leen will head Bird & Bird’s IP portfolio management practice in Asia and will be working out of Hong Kong and Beijing. She has been recognised as an Asialaw Leading Lawyer for the last five consecutive years for her intellectual property work.
Ai-Leen has advised on all aspects of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property work, including trade marks, patents, copyrights, designs and anti-piracy. She also deals with intellectual property advisory matters, infringement matters, oppositions (including the negotiation and drafting of worldwide co-existence agreements), rectifications and design registrations. She acts for clients in relation to intellectual property commercialisation and licensing work, and has advised on event organisation, media and entertainment law issues.
Bird & Bird’s intellectual property team in Hong Kong and Beijing provides the full range of IP services and notably, the firm is able to file trade marks directly in China through its own trade mark agency Bird & Bird IP (Beijing) Co. Ltd.which was established in Beijingjust over a year ago and which Ai-Leen will be managing.
Ai-Leen’s appointment follows on from a period of rapid growth for the group, with the recruitment in the last 12 months of five IP lawyers and four experienced trade mark and patent specialists, and is part of a wider development for the IP practice in Asia which will see Shirley Kwok focusing more on contentious IP work in China and Alison Wong in South East Asia.
Matthew Laight, Bird & Bird’s Managing Partner in Hong Kong and Beijing, said: “We welcome Ai-Leen to the Bird & Bird partnership. Ai-Leen’s arrival cements our position as one of the most comprehensive providers of intellectual property services in Greater China. ”
Bird & Bird CEO David Kerr added: “Over the past few years we have been expanding rapidly and successfully in Asia. The addition of a new partner demonstrates that we continue to build cohesively there, while simultaneously growing our international capability in IP.”
Commenting on her appointment, Ai-Leen said: “I am very excited by this opportunity to join such a renowned international intellectual property practice. Bird & Bird’s international platform will allow me to advise clients on a pan-Asian and European level and I very much look forward to joining the firm and contributing to its continued growth.”
