High profile appointment gives firm’s data protection and privacy group major boost
Francis Aldhouse, the Deputy Information Commissioner will be joining international law firm Bird & Bird. Joining as a consultant, Francis’s appointment will add a major boost to the firm’s data protection and privacy team which has developed significantly on an international level in the past year.
As one of the most well known names in data protection, Francis’ expertise will be invaluable to the firm’s clients especially at a time of considerable focus on data protection. Having worked in the regulators office since 1985 soon after the first Data Protection Act was established, Francis has been instrumental in shaping all areas of UK law while also representing the UK in EU and international initiatives.
Commenting on his appointment, Ruth Boardman, co-head of the firm’s international data protection and privacy practice group said:
"Francis’s appointment is very exciting for us. His insight into the attitudes and approaches of regulators internationally will be invaluable to clients, in particular given EU developments suggesting that aspects of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance may expose companies to sanctions for breach of EU privacy law".
"This is a most interesting move for me. I shall be retiring from the Commissioner’s office in January 2006. Working with Bird & Bird gives me an opportunity to continue to make my knowledge and experience available to the privacy and business communities. I very much look forward to collaborating with new colleagues and forging new relationships with former colleagues and old friends".
Bird & Bird's data protection & privacy group has grown in the last year with a number of high profile appointments across its international network. A team of specialists joined in France last May headed by Ariane Mole from CNIL (The National Commission for Data Protection and Privacy in France) while more recently in Madrid, data protection expert Javier Fernández-Samaniego was recruited. Bird & Bird is one of only a few firms with a dedicated European data protection practice.
