EU legislation update (July 2021)

In this summer issue of EU Legislative Updates we bring you an overview of the European legislation initiatives from the recent period. We suppose that the biggest and long-awaited new is the Proposal on Artificial Intelligence Regulation. A risk-based approach has been adopted by the Commission and the proposal differentiates AI systems in categories with regard to the associated risks. We also provide you with a summary of the Joint Opinion on the AI proposal adopted by the European Data Protection Supervisor and the European Data Protection Board, which focused on the interactions between the proposal of AI regulation and data protection regulation.
During the pandemic, consumers' online purchases increased significantly, which has highlighted a need for revision of the legal framework for the safety of goods. In this context, the Commission has presented a proposal for revision of the General Product Safety rules in order to preserve its role as a safety net for consumers and to adapt the legal framework to the challenges posed by new technologies and online selling.
Under the new rules proposed by the European Commission in the form of the Data Act, which should be published later this year, private companies may face obligations to provide access to their data. Insights into the plan have been provided based on the recent publication of the Initial Impact Assessment.
We also continue to monitor the development of the so-called Digital Package and this time we bring BEREC's views on the Digital Markets Act.
