On Wednesday, 16 September 2015, the Dutch Tax Team organised its third annual breakfast seminar Prinsjesdag (Prince's Day) at the International Business Club of the World Trade Center The Hague. This year's event, Bird & Bird co-hosted with the International Business Club.
In the Netherlands the State Opening of the parliament always falls every year on the third Tuesday of September. On this day, known as Prince's Day, the King travels in the Golden Coach to the Hall of Knights in The Hague. Assembled there are all the government ministers, state secretaries, members of the Senate, House of Representatives and distinguished guests.
On Prince's Day the King opens the new parliamentary session of the States-General by reading the Speech from the Throne. In this official address the King outlines the Governments plans for the coming year. The minister of Finance's ceremonial briefcase also plays a central role. After the Speech from the Throne the minister takes the briefcase to the House of Representatives and opens it to present the national budget and the Budget Memorandum.
During the Bird & Bird breakfast meeting the proposed amendments to Dutch tax law, which were published only a few hours before this event, were discussed by Willem Bongaerts, Arnoud Knijnenburg and Pieter Camps. More than 50 attendees from different national and international organisations took the opportunity to learn more about these amendments.
Participants were amongst others informed on the proposals in relation to the Dutch participation exemption (anti-hybrid & GAAR), Cooperatives, non-resident investors, country-by-country reporting, integration of WBSO and RDA and the Box III amendments and much more. In addition the future of the Dutch innovation box (tax incentive to stimulate R&D) was discussed as well as the increasing focus on tax policy. Several discussed subjects resulted in very interesting and lively debates.
The breakfast seminar was very well received. Participants amongst others appreciated the update on such short notice after the disclosure of the 2016 Budget.
