On Wednesday 5 September Bird & Bird hosted a “Legal Checklist for Tech Start-Ups” session for the finalists of the Cisco BIG (British Innovation Gateways) Awards at our London office. Bird & Bird are co-sponsors of the BIG Awards with JP Morgan, DNX and Octopus Communications. Corporate partner Richard Eaton is a member of the panel of judges, tasked with appraising the short listed start-ups.
Roger Bickerstaff, co-head of our international IT sector group, provided an introduction on Bird & Bird, and was followed by James Froud presenting a summary of five top employment tips. Barry Jennings addressed the effective use of commercial contracts, before Tim Harris covered the key intellectual property issues facing start-ups.
A question and answer session, lead by Richard Eaton, followed, which produced some interesting discussion points and highlighted the different needs and requirements facing early stage companies.
We ran a live update throughout the session on our @TwoBirdsIT twitter account.
The Cisco Big Awards have been set up to attract high-potential technology start-ups that are seeking investment and support to accelerate their development. Bird & Bird, as the official legal sponsors, will provide legal advice and ongoing mentoring to the winners for the next 12 months.
The submission process for the Big Awards started in February and entries from over the 200 companies were received. The winner will be selected from the six finalists at the live finals being held at Cisco House in the Olympic Park on 12 September.
