The emerging defence and security opportunities in Brazil

16 October 2012

Bird & Bird is holding a seminar titled 'The emerging defence and security opportunites in Brazil' on Tuesday 16 October 2012 from 08.00.

Brazil has a growing economy, a massive territory, lengthy borders and a developing offshore oil industry to protect. Additionally, Brazil is playing an increasingly important role with respect to security both within and without its wider region. This includes its relationships with its neighbours, its participation in international peacekeeping missions and its ambition for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. The country is also hosting the two largest sporting events on the planet soon – the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Against this background, the Brazilian defence and security establishment is embarking on a long-term programme of modernisation - focused on the replacement of obsolete platforms and capabilities with new domestically produced and imported equipment and the development of a robust industrial base that will become a significant player, both in Latin America, and abroad. Given this, the Brazilian defence market is attracting significant international investment with a number of foreign OEMs seeking to enter the Brazilian defence market through the transfer of technology for the development of defence and security systems by domestic companies.

Dr Llyr Jones of BAE Systems will provide an overview of the defence and security landscape in Brazil.
