Each year, the Sydney office of Bird & Bird invites applications from law students in the penultimate year of their legal studies to participate in the Bird & Bird Summer Clerkship Programme in Australia, which is conducted as part of the programme currently co-ordinated by the Law Society of NSW.
Who you are
Every summer clerk, graduate or lawyer we select has a potential to be both a leader of our global firm and a recognised leader in their chosen field of law.
While academic excellence is a given, as a leading international technology focused law firm, we are seeking summer clerks, graduates and lawyers who are personable and have demonstrated enthusiasm, leadership and agility in their approach to opportunities and challenges.
Our lawyers have broad ranging interests, from music to the martial arts. Typically most of our people have served in community roles, excelled in artistic endeavours or pursued a sporting interest. Whatever your interest or passion may be, it demonstrates to us that you have the initiative to create for yourself and ultimately for the firm, a successful, exciting and sustainable career in the law.
Working with us
Although we are a tech focused firm, we still prefer human interactions when it comes to selecting our team. We read every single application that is sent to us, often several times over, just to ensure we invite the right people to interview for our summer clerkships.
As a summer clerk, typically you will undertake rotations in two of our practice groups in the Sydney office, each rotation lasting 4 weeks. You are likely, however, to get exposure to most of our other practice groups by attending meetings & events during your time with us. All of our summer clerks enjoy a paid break over the Christmas and New Year period.
As a valued member of a specialist team, you will be involved in real legal work which adds value to our clients and which will create an invaluable experience for you.
You will be supported by a lawyer buddy (someone who has been through the summer clerk process themselves) and a partner mentor throughout each of your rotations to ensure you get the most out of your time with us.

Katrina Dang, Summer Clerk 2017/2018, University of Sydney
“The standout experience of my clerkship with Bird & Bird was the amount of contact time I had with partners and senior lawyers. Not only did they involve me with clients, but regularly took the time to explain individual matters in context and give detailed feedback on my work. This made for an incredibly valuable learning experience.”
Tom Sutcliffe, Summer Clerk 2017/2018, University of Sydney
“My summer clerkship with Bird & Bird provided me with the opportunity to work alongside some truly brilliant lawyers who are some of the best in their respective fields. The things that really stood out to me about Bird & Bird were the personalised mentorship that provided me with deep insight into the industry and (perhaps more importantly) the genuinely friendly and welcoming culture of the firm.”
