Elizabeth Riley



Liz joined our Sports Group in 2008, having qualified as a barrister at 20 Essex Street Chambers.

She advises on a range of sports-related issues including anti-doping and other disciplinary and corruption matters, rules and regulations, constitutions and governance, selection, player contracts, image rights, commercial sponsorship and supply agreements, broadcasting, ticketing and contractual disputes.

Liz has acted for international and national governing bodies and organisations, event organisers, sporting venues, clubs, sponsors, agents and individual athletes across a range of sports including baseball, basketball, cricket, cycling, darts, equestrian sports, football, golf, judo, netball, rugby league, rugby union, snooker, tennis and wrestling.

Recent work includes representing the World Anti-Doping Agency, alongside Jon Taylor, in a case against the British Olympic Association before CAS concerning the validity of the BOA’s bye-law rendering certain athletes previously convicted of a doping violation ineligible for selection for the Olympic Games; acting for an international governing body on a comprehensive review of its constitutional and regulatory structure; acting for an individual athlete in an Olympic selection dispute.

Liz is a qualified UK Anti-Doping tutor and is the only female member of the RFU’s Disciplinary Panel (sitting on on-field disciplinary cases and competition appeals). She currently plays rugby for London Wasps and has also represented England A and the female Barbarians, as well as being part of this year’s England touch rugby team. Liz studied at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge where she gained a First class BA (Hons) degree in law. She has a good working knowledge of French.
