Jeremy Robinson
Associate
Jeremy Robinson
Jeremy has practised competition law and economic regulation since 1999, and at Bird & Bird since May 2006. In the 2008 edition of Chambers' UK guide, Jeremy is described as "an associate to watch" amongst "leading individuals" in the area of Competition/European law.

Jeremy's practice combines three elements:-
  1. advice on EU and UK competition law - this includes obtaining merger clearances for clients from competition authorities, advising on anti-competitive agreements and practices, State Aid and public procurement. He has experience of advising on the complex relationship of intellectual property law and competition law, both in a contentious and non-contentious context. Recently he contributed the competition law chapter for the Law Society's Intellectual Property Law Handbook (edited by Lorna Brazell and written by Bird & Bird), and spoke at a Management Forum conference on the IP/Competition Law Frontier.

  2. advice on economic regulation - Jeremy has advised electricity, gas, water and broadcasting companies on compliance with statutory and licensing obligations imposed in the framework of EU or national regulation.

  3. advice on general regulatory matters - this includes advice on discrete areas of European or international law such as the Nato Status of Forces Agreement, UK trade rules for import of military equipment. Jeremy is also monitoring developments in EU and UK climate change legislation, such as the UK's Climate Change Bill.

Jeremy has good experience of working with the UK Government. Between January 2003 and February 2004 he worked as an Assistant Director at the Department of Trade and Industry in London (now the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform). Whilst there, he helped develop the UK's competition policy, in particular, working in a team to prepare regulation to give effect to the EU's Regulation for modernisation competition law (Regulation 1/2003) and in so doing worked with the concurrent regulators (OFT, Ofgem, Ofwat, Ofcom, Ofreg, ORR and the CAA) to understand the relationship between EU competition law and national economic regulation.

At a previous law firm as part of his training, Jeremy undertook two intra-office secondments, spending six months working on EU law matters in Brussels, and six months on general commercial matters (including competition) in Stuttgart.
